Course Description:

PDRE's Ultrasound (U/S) Guided Peripheral Intravenous (IV) Insertion Course covers topics including vessel and catheter selection, site preparation, procedures, difficulties, potential dangers and technology. In addition, this course also addresses the use of ultrasound equipment to assist with peripheral IV insertion.

Audience:

PDRE's Ultrasound (U/S) Guided Peripheral Intravenous (IV) Insertion Course is for healthcare providers who may be required to perform IV therapy and blood withdrawals in the healthcare settings. These include personnel who will need the necessary knowledge, skills, and ability to begin, maintain, and perform to the highest standard of care infusion of intravenous fluids and withdraw of blood such as physicians, nurses (licensed vocational nurses LVNs, licensed practical nurses LPNs, registered nurses, nurse practitioners NPs), certified phlebotomy technicians, emergency medical technicians EMTs, paramedics and other designated healthcare providers. This Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) course will fulfill the mandatory requirement for licensure in the State of California.

Course Format/Time:

  • Classroom-based
    • Instructor and video, with skills conducted throughout
  • Full course:
    • 3 Hour Course: Theory and Clinical, plus additional time for breaks and lunch

Course Prerequisites & Requirements:

  • IV Therapy Certification course for Registered Nurses (RNs) must be compliant with the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN) requirements.
  • Students understand that live IV insertions will be performed with designated peers, volunteers or a delegated proxy if applicable to fulfill the requirements of the course and official certification.
    • Comprehensive course didactics including safety measures, complications, and adverse reactions with psychomotor skills evaluation and practice will give the students the confidence for the live venipunctures and/or blood withdrawal as needed.
    • You are welcome to bring your own proxy who must be at least 18 years or older, in great health and fitness, and must sign a mandatory consent and waiver of liability signed prior to being practiced on.
  • If a student has an acute or chronic medical condition that prevents him or her from participating (e.g., such as pregnancy, predisposing vasovagal response, etc.), a medical release form needs to be signed by his or her personal doctor in order to partake in the live psychomotor skills evaluation and assessment portions of the course.
  • Students are required to attend the full classroom time in order to be certified. Any missed contact hours for the course needs to be made-up or remediated for full course completion and certification at the California State level per the BRN guidelines and recommendations.
  • Student Attire must include medical scrubs and shoes that are closed toes in addition to personal protective equipment (PPE), which will be provided during the course as a universal precaution.
  • For the safety and precaution of our other students in addition to the nature of this course, individuals who have been diagnosed with any active bloodborne diseases are approached with in a case-by-case non-discriminatory basis and may, unfortunately, be ineligible to attend this course due to the bloodborne pathogen exposure risks during peripheral IV catheter insertion and removal as well as in blood withdrawal hands-on practicing by novice students.

  • Students who successfully complete the Intravenous (IV) Therapy & Blood Withdrawal Certification Course, including the following components, will receive an Intravenous (IV) Therapy & Blood Withdrawal Certification Course Completion Card:
    • Actively participate in, practice and complete all learning stations.
    • Complete the basic and advanced theoretical and clinical contents including the practice session requirements, psychomotor skills evaluation and testings.
    • The student must attend the full course and must attend another course time and date if there is an absence to complete the requirement for certification.
    • Live IV insertion or “sticks” will be performed on other students present as well as additional designated proxies who volunteer to be the IV Therapy and/or Blood Withdrawal practice patient.

Continuing Education:

  • The full course is 3-hour course designed for official certification and completion of Continuing Education (CE) accredited by the California Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
