BLS for Healthcare Providers (Instructor Course)

The Basic Life Support (BLS) for Healthcare Providers Instructor Course is designed to provide a wide variety of healthcare professionals the ability to recognize several life-threatening emergencies, provide CPR, use an AED, and relieve choking in a safe, timely and effective manner.

In the classroom, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA BLS Instructor to complete BLS skills practice and skills testing. Students also complete a written exam.

Audience:

This course is for healthcare professionals who desire to be an American Heart Association (AHA) instructor with Palm Desert Resuscitaion Education LLC (PDRE) and teach prospective students how to perform CPR, as well as other lifesaving skills, in a wide variety of in-hospital and out-of-hospital settings.

Healthcare providers that are typically required to take this course are physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physical and occupational therapists, physician's assistants, residents or fellows, or medical or nursing students in training, aides, medical or nursing assistants, police officers, and other allied health personnel.

  • Pre-briefing
    • In the 2020 BLS Provider course, Instructors conduct a pre-briefing with students immediately before the start of each simulation. The goals of pre-briefing are to establish a positive learning environment and to provide information about the session to students. In addition, teams will set goals for the case and discuss the goals they set in the pre-briefing in the debriefing. This will prepare students for success in the course.
  • CPR Coach
    • The CPR Coach is a new role within the resuscitation team. The CPR Coach role is designed to promote the delivery of high-quality CPR and allow the Team Leader to focus on other elements of cardiac arrest care, coordinate the various team members’ assigned tasks, and ensure that clinical care is delivered according to AHA guidelines.

  • The American Heart Association Chain of Survival, specifically the BLS components
  • High-quality CPR for adults, children, and infants
    • 1-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
    • 2-Rescuer CPR and AED for adult, child and infant
    • Use of an AED
  • Differences between adult, child and infant rescue techniques
  • Effective ventilations using a barrier device
    • Bag-mask techniques for adult, child and infant
    • Rescue breathing for adult, child and infant
  • Relief of foreign-body airway obstruction (choking) for adults and infants
    • Relief of choking for adult, child and infant
  • Importance of teams in multi-rescuer resuscitation and performance as an effective team member during multi-rescuer CPR
  • CPR with an advanced airway*
    • This is an introduction to the compression/ventilation rate and ratio for a patient who has an advanced airway in place. For more information on advanced airways, please refer to the Airway Management Course.

Instructor-led, hands-on class format reinforces skills proficiency

The BLS Instructor-led course teaches both single-rescuer and team basic life support skills for application in both prehospital and in-facility environments, with a focus on High-Quality CPR and team dynamics.

  • Initial Provider Course:
    • Requires approximately 3 hours and 40 minutes to complete, including skills practice and skills testing.
  • Renewal/Update Course:
    • Requires approximately 3 hours, including skills practice and skills testing.
  • Course time based on 1 instructor: 6 student: 2 manikins

Course Certification and Duration:

Students who successfully complete the BLS Instructor Course, including the following components, will receive a BLS Provider Instructor Course Completion Card, valid for two years:

  • Actively participate in, practice and complete all learning stations
  • Complete the open-book written exam with a minimum score of 84%
  • Pass the 2-Rescuer Adult BLS With AED
  • Pass the 2-Rescuer Child and Infant BLS Skills Tests

BLS Instructor Provider (eCard or print):

  • As of the recently updated AHA Guidelines and Recommendations in ECC and CPR, the AHA has released materials for the BLS Instructor Led Course. 2020 BLS materials include new BLS eCards and print course completion cards to be issued when teaching the new BLS Course.
