The American Red Cross Training Program: First Aid and CPR/AED

Palm Desert Resuscitation Education LLC (PDRE) and the American Red Cross (ARC) offer a broad range of training programs for both the lay public and professional responders.

We are an Authorized Provider (AP) and Licensed Training Provider in American Red Cross Training Program in First Aid and CPR/AED.

Course Content:

  • The purpose of the courses in the First Aid/CPR/AED program is to help participants recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies to know how to care for a suddenly injured or ill person until more advanced medical personnel arrive and take over.
  • Teach participants the information and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person.
  • Teach participants how to decide whether advanced medical care is needed.
  • The program offers the flexibility of selecting First Aid, CPR and AED courses for adults, children and infants depending upon your training needs.
    • The courses in the First Aid/CPR/AED program are organized into three categories: 
      • First Aid – Lessons 1, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8
      • CPR – Lessons 1, 2, 3, 4, and 8
      • AED Only – Lessons 3 and 8
    • Lesson numbers correspond to chapter numbers in the participant manual.

      • Chapter 1 provides the foundational knowledge to appropriately respond in an emergency:
        • Recognizing an emergency
        • Obtaining consent
        • Good Samaritan laws
        • Activating EMS
        • Check-Call-Care
          • Scene Size-Up and Initial Impression
            • Checking a Responsive Person
            • Checking a Person Who Appears Unresponsive
      • Chapter 2 includes information on cardiac emergencies, the Cardiac Chain of Survival and CPR; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Recognizing signals of a cardiac emergency
        • Care of a heart attack
        • Adult and Pediatric Cardiac Chain of Survival
        • CPR
      • Chapter 3 includes information on defibrillation, how to use an AED and what precautions to take; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Defibrillation
        • How to use an AED
        • AED precautions
      • Chapter 4 focuses on chocking emergencies; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Common Risks of Chocking
        • How to care for a person who is chocking
      • Chapter 5 discusses the signals of and specific care for sudden illnesses; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Signals of common sudden illnesses
        • General care for sudden illnesses including:
          • Shock
          • Heart Attach (First Aid only)
          • Breathing Emergencies (Asthma and Anaphylaxis)
          • Diabetic Emergencies
          • Seizures
          • Fainting
          • Stroke
      • Chapter 6 focuses on all types of injuries; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Signs and symptoms and care for various of soft tissue injuries (open and closed wounds; burn injuries)
        • Controlling external bleeding
        • Signs and symptoms and care for muscle, bone, or join injuries
        • Signs and symptoms and care for head, neck and spinal injurie
      • Chapter 7 provides an overview of environmental emergencies, including heat- and cold-related emergencies, as well as poisoning; the topics covered in the corresponding lesson are the following:
        • Signs and symptoms and care for heat-related illnesses
        • Signs and symptoms and care for cold-related emergencies
        • Signs and symptoms and care for poisoning
      • Chapter 8 is the course conclusion, with a group activity for a final knowledge review of all lessons.
        • In this lesson the participants will learn how to access their digital certifications.
    • First aid basics
    • Medical emergencies
    • Injury emergencies
    • Environmental emergencies
    • Adult CPR and AED use
    • Optional modules in child CPR and AED use and infant CPR, including child and infant choking
    • Optional written test

  • The First Aid/CPR/AED training program includes supplemental, add-on training modules for more advanced training and certification in key topics including OSHA-mandated Bloodborne Pathogens Training, Anaphylaxis and Epinephrine Auto-Injector, Asthma Inhaler Training, and Administering, and Emergency Oxygen.

Course Format/Time:

  • Classroom-based and/or online based: the American Red Cross First Aid & CPR/AED program is available in two delivery formats: classroom (instructor-led) and blended learning, featuring online simulation learning followed by an in-person skills session.
    • Blended Learning Overview
      • Blended Learning combines online learning with an in-person skill session conducted by a Red Cross certified instructor.
      • Courses build the same knowledge and skills as traditional classroom courses.
      • Participants receive the same two-year certification.
  • With a variety of course options and delivery formats, courses in the American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED training program range from 3 hours to 6 hours in duration.
  • The course outlines and lesson plans have been developed for a class of 6 to 10 participants to one instructor.
    • Additional time and/or co-instructors are needed for larger classes.
    • Additional factors that may affect course time include:
      • Skill level of participants and/or disability
      • Instructor experience
      • Number of instructors
      • Optional skills, modules and/or lessons
  • English and Spanish versions of the program are available.

Course Prerequisites and Important Disclaimers:

  • Please note that this course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card from the American Red Cross in First Aid CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.
    • If you work in the healthcare and medical setting(s), please make sure your organization or employer request for a specific certification by either American Heart Association (AHA), American Red Cross (ARC), or other equivalent organizations to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.
    • Each PDRE courses or seminars may be independently based on the specific association or organization you intend to take the training certification class in.
  • Participants in AED-only courses must have current American Red Cross or equivalent certification in CPR
  • Knee protection are available if requested ahead of time if needed, such as blankets or a pad
  • Health risks while participating in any course activities
    • Be sure if you have any major health concerns regarding the course activities that you seek your personal health care provider before class
    • It’s best to wait until you are not currently ill with any active infections to prevent disease transmissions and precautions to our other students.

Certification:

  • During the course, an PDRE and American Red Cross Instructor conducts video-based lessons and works with students to complete their first aid skills practice and testing.
    • Attend all class sessions
    • Participate in all course activities
    • Demonstrate competency in all required skills
    • Successfully participate in Putting It All Together Assessment scenario(s)
  • To achieve course certification, participants must successfully participate in the Putting It All Together Assessment scenarios at the end of lessons that contain the require skills.
  • Successful participation means that each participant went through the entire scenario, as the responder, with minimal guidance from the PDRE American Red Cross instructor
  • Passing a written exam is not required for certification.
    • A written exam is available for use when requested or required by a company or state/local regulations.
  • Upon completion of this course, students receive an American Red Cross First Aid and CPR/AED Course Completion Certificate or Card that is valid for two years.
    • Course participants and the organizations that hire individuals will receive an American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED Red Certification or Card.
