Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support (S.T.A.B.L.E.) Program

The Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood Pressure, Lab Work, and Emotional Support (S.T.A.B.L.E.) Program centers solely on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick and ill infants and neonates who may need more medical management in S.T.A.B.L.E.’s fundamental neonatal-care topics: sugar, temperature, airway, blood pressure, lab work, and emotional support for the family, most importantly. In addition, the educational platform also describes a supplementary component on quality improvement to stress the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care delivered to sick infants and neonates.

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program, 7th Edition:

The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program provides essential information about neonatal stabilization for maternal/infant caregivers in all settings and focuses exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants. S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the 6 assessment parameters covered in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support for the family. A seventh module, Quality Improvement, stresses the importance of professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants. Neonatal assessment and stabilization guidelines are offered in each module. Prevention of adverse events and delivery of safe patient care are stressed throughout the program.

The new seventh edition has been updated to stay current with changes in neonatal care and includes a new feature, “Let’s Learn More,” that delves deeper into topics. The Sugar module is organized into 7 Guidelines and Care Recommendations with a new recommendation to use dextrose gel for the at-risk infant who is healthy enough to feed. New full-color illustrations are included throughout each module to explain difficult concepts.

Comprehensively reviewed by highly regarded neonatologists, nurses, and respiratory therapists, The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program is considered the follow-up, complementary program to resuscitation education.

Dr Kristine Karlsen is a neonatal nurse practitioner who has been involved in neonatal care in a variety of settings including transport, education, patient care, and simulation for more than 40 years. She is the founder of the internationally recognized S.T.A.B.L.E. Program and author and developer of The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program Pretransport / Postresuscitation stabilization neonatal education course, The S.T.A.B.L.E.– Cardiac Module course (book and slide program), the STABLEize™ app (for Apple and Android), and The S.T.A.B.L.E. Program’s Gestational Age and Physical Assessment of the Newborn slide program. More than 850,000 students have completed a S.T.A.B.L.E. Program course, and the Program is taught in more than 45 countries.

Audience:

The 100% classroom-based course provides training for healthcare providers whose occupation require post-resuscitation or pre-transport management of infants and neonates as well as professionals who might encounter emergency situations needing sugar, temperature, airway, blood pressure, lab work, and emotional support management of sick infants and neonates during their work.

These include but are not limited to:

  • Physicians and nurses specializing in or working with infant and neonatal patient population
    • Pediatric, ER and family practice physicians, including residents
    • RNs working in L&D, postpartum, nursery, neonatal intensive care, emergency departments; nurse midwives; LPNs and nursing assistants
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • EMTs
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Prehospital and in-facility healthcare providers (outside of critical-care areas)

Features:

  • An instructor led course by a Lead and/or Support S.T.A.B.L.E. Instructor(s).
  • 100% classroom format reinforces knowledge and skills proficiency of the S.T.A.B.L.E. Program, the most widely distributed and implemented neonatal education program to focus exclusively on the post-resuscitation/pre-transport stabilization care of sick infants.
  • Updated evidenced-based content based on a mnemonic coined -- by Kristine Karlsen, PhD, NNP-BC the Author/Founder/Program Director -- to optimize learning, retention and recall of information, S.T.A.B.L.E. stands for the six assessment and care modules in the program: Sugar, Temperature, Airway, Blood pressure, Lab work, and Emotional support.
  • A seventh module, Quality Improvement stresses the professional responsibility of improving and evaluating care provided to sick infants.

Course Content:

  • Sugar and safe care -- glucose monitoring, hypoglycemia, umbilical catheters, intrauterine growth curves, and more
  • Temperature -- detrimental effects of hypothermia, temperature's effects on metabolic rate and oxygen consumption, neuroprotective hypothermia, and more.
  • Airway -- patient evaluation and monitoring, intubation, blood gas interpretation, and more
  • Blood pressure -- shock, cardiac output, dopamine use, and more.
  • Lab work -- neonatal infection, laboratory tests to obtain after transport, evaluation algorithms, hematologic reference ranges, and more.
  • Emotional support -- providing relationship-based care to babies and their parents, ideas for when the infant requires transport, and more.
  • Quality improvement -- teamwork and team training, self-assessment, and more.
