Course Prerequisites & Requirements:
IV Therapy Certification course for LVNs must be compliant with the BVNPT California State requirements.
Students understand that 3-5 live IV insertions will be performed with designated peers, volunteers or a delegated proxy if applicable to fulfill the requirements of the course and official certification.
Comprehensive course didactics including safety measures, complications, and adverse reactions with psychomotor skills evaluation and practice will give the students the confidence for the live venipunctures and/or blood withdrawal as needed.
The State of California and BVNPT recommends at least 3 live venipunctures in combination with finger stick practice on their nominated peers, volunteers or proxies to complete the LVN requirement for the course.
You are welcome to bring your own proxy who must be at least 18 years or older, in great health and fitness, and must sign a mandatory consent and waiver of liability signed prior to being practiced on.
Licensed RNs do not need the live practical requirements since their education curriculum for their associates or bachelor's degree encompasses IV Therapy and Blood Withdrawal already; RNs, however, are welcome to take the refresher course with other previously certified healthcare providers.
If a student has an acute or chronic medical condition that prevents him or her from participating (e.g., such as pregnancy, predisposing vasovagal response, etc.), a medical release form needs to be signed by his or her personal doctor in order to partake in the live psychomotor skills evaluation and assessment portions of the course.
Students are required to attend the full 36-hour classroom time in order to be certified. Any missed contact hours for the course needs to be made-up or remediated for full course completion and certification at the California State level per the BVNPT guidelines and recommendations.
Student Attire must include medical scrubs and shoes that are closed toes in addition to personal protective equipment (PPE), which will be provided during the course as a universal precaution.
For the safety and precaution of our other students in addition to the nature of this course, individuals who have been diagnosed with any active bloodborne diseases are approached with in a case-by-case non-discriminatory basis and may, unfortunately, be ineligible to attend this course due to the bloodborne pathogen exposure risks during peripheral IV catheter insertion and removal as well as in blood withdrawal hands-on practicing by novice students.
