Heartsaver® CPR AED

Heartsaver® CPR AED is a classroom, video-based, instructor-led course that teaches adult CPR and AED use, as well as how to relieve choking on an adult. This course teaches skills with AHA’s research-proven Practice-While-Watching (PWW) technique, which allows instructors to observe the students, provide feedback and guide the students’ learning of skills.

You will learn:

  • Adult CPR and AED use
  • Adult choking
  • Child CPR and AED use (optional)
  • Infant CPR (optional)
  • Child choking (optional)
  • Infant choking (optional)

CPR instruction includes high-quality compressions, airway management, breathing, and how to use a mask.

Audience:

This course is for anyone with limited or no medical training who needs a course completion card in CPR and AED use to meet job, regulatory or other requirements.

Heartsaver courses are designed for anyone with little or no medical training who needs a course completion card for job, regulatory (e.g., OSHA), or other requirements. These courses can also be taken by anyone who wants to be prepared for an emergency in any setting.

Course Content and Description:

This Instructor-led classroom course is designed to prepare students to provide CPR and use an automated external defibrillator (AED). Upon successful completion of the course, including a CPR and AED skills test, students receive a Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card (print or eCard), valid for two years.

  • Key changes reflecting the new science from the updated American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Adult CPR and AED use
  • Opioid-associated life-threatening emergencies
  • Child CPR and AED use
  • Infant CPR
  • Adult, child, and infant choking
  • Optional modules in child CPR and AED use and infant CPR, including child and infant choking
  • Optional written test/exam

  • Explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
  • Recognize when someone needs CPR
  • Perform high-quality CPR for an adult

    • The Heartsaver CPR AED Student Workbook/Provider Manual is for use by a single user as a student reference tool before, during, and after the course.

      • Saddle-stitched within a full-color soft cover
      • Includes 72 pages of full-color images and text

Course Format/Time:

  • Classroom-based
    • Classroom-based (instructor and video, with skills conducted throughout)
    • During the course, an AHA Instructor conducts video-based lessons and works with students to complete their first aid skills practice and testing.
  • Heartsaver CPR AED Course requires approximately 3-4 hours
  • Course time based on
    • 1 instructor to 6 students to 2 manikins

Course Prerequisites:

  • Present your expired American Heart Association (AHA) Heartsaver CPR AED Provider Card to be considered a renewing provider and pay a reduced price for the course
    • We do not accept non-AHA provider cards
    • Please sign up for PDRE’s accredited Heartsaver CPR AED for Healthcare Providers course and receive the most globally recognized AHA provider card
  • Heartsaver CPR AED Provider Manual
    • A current updated Heartsaver CPR AED Provider Manual is required to attend the course
    • Purchase the updated book from PDRE for during online class enrollment or before the start of the course at our facility
    • Please bring your book if you own the most up-to-date version

    • Recognize: when someone needs CPR and explain the concepts of the Chain of Survival
    • Describe: how high-quality CPR improves survival; how to use an AED on an infant*; when and how to help a choking adult or child
    • Perform: high-quality CPR for an adult; as a team member during multi-rescuer CPR; high-quality CPR for a child*; high-quality CPR for an infant*
    • Demonstrate: how to use an AED on an adult; how to help a choking infant*; how to use an AED on a child*; give effective breaths using mouth-to-mouth or a mask for all age groups
  • Upon completion of this course, students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED Course Completion Card that is valid for two years.
    • Upon completion of this course, students receive an American Heart Association Heartsaver CPR AED course completion card that is valid for 2 years.
    • As of December 2017, the AHA has introduced the Heartsaver course completion card for K-12 school systems. The card signifies that an individual in the K-12 school system has successfully completed the objectives and skills evaluations in accordance with the curriculum of the AHA Heartsaver program. If you are a K-12 school, ask your Training Center about this option.
