Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens

Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogen is a classroom course, led by an AHA Instructor or Facilitator, that teaches students and employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials.

This course is designed to meet Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements for bloodborne pathogens training when paired with site-specific instruction.

This course is designed for anyone with a reasonable chance of coming into contact with bloodborne pathogens, such as:

  • Correctional Officers
  • Childcare workers
  • Security guards
  • Maintenance workers
  • School personnel
  • Hotel housekeepers
  • Health and fitness club staff
  • Tattoo artists

Course Content and Descriptions:

Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens is a classroom course that teaches employees how to protect themselves and others from being exposed to blood or blood-containing materials.

The AHA's Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course has been updated to reflect updates to the Occupational Exposure to Bloodborne Pathogens Standard (29CFR 1910.1030), which is published by the US Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA).

AHA’s course uses the PACT acronym (Protect, Act, Clean, Tell) and slogan, “Make a PACT, Know How to Act,” to help students learn and easily recall bloodborne pathogens training.

Learning Objectives:

Students learn how to:

  • Protect themselves from exposure to bloodborne pathogens 
  • Act when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace
  • Clean themselves and the area when exposed to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace 
  • Tell or report any exposure to blood or blood-containing materials in the workplace

  • Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Student eBook (English)

Course Format/Time:

  • Classroom-based
    • Classroom-based (instructor and video, with skills conducted throughout)
    • During the course, an AHA Instructor conducts video-based lessons and works with students to complete skills requirement and optional testing.
  • Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course requires approximately 1 hour
    • The classroom course is approximately 1 hour long, not including site-specific training.
  • Course time based on
    • 1 instructor to 6 students

Course Prerequisites:

  • Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Provider Manual
    • A current updated Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Provider Manual is required to attend the course
    • Purchase the updated book from PDRE for during online class enrollment or before the start of the course at our facility
    • Please bring your book if you own the most up-to-date version

Course Fee:

  • Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens with Provider Manual: $80
  • Heartsaver® Bloodborne Pathogens without Provider Manual: $65

Certification:

  • During the course, an AHA Instructor conducts video-based lessons and works with students to complete their skills requirement and optional testing.
  • American Heart Association Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Course Completion Card that is valid for ONE (1) year.
    • Upon completion of this course, students receive a course completion certificate that can be presented to their employer.
    • Tear-out course participation card included on back cover of Heartsaver Bloodborne Pathogens Student Workbook (back cover of eBook version may also be printed)
