HeartCode® Pediatric Advanced Life Support (Online Part 1)is a Web-based, self-paced instructional program that teaches healthcare providers knowledge and skills needed to recognize and prevent cardiopulmonary arrest in infants and children.
This program uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning about pediatric advanced life support.
To enter the course, students must complete the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment. Students are then presented with 12 In-hospital patient cases and a team dynamics lesson. Cases may be repeated as many times as necessary to pass.
Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the written exam with a score of 84%. Students then are able to attend the hands-on session required for full course completion.
After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students practice and test their skills with an AHA Instructor or on a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) system.Upon successful completion of the cognitive and skills tests, students receive a course completion card.
Skills sessions can be sold separately or, more commonly, with a bundle package.
Audience:
HeartCode PALS Part 1 is for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies, specifically those seeking an alternative (nonclassroom) method for completing an initial or update PALS Course. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an PALS course completion card for job or other requirements.
Features:
HeartCode PALS is the AHA’s PALS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on session.
The online portion of this comprehensive eLearning program uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings.

To enter the course, students must complete the PALS Precourse Self-Assessment. Students are then presented with 12 In-hospital patient cases and a team dynamics lesson. Cases may be repeated as many times as necessary to pass. Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the multiple-choice exam with a minimum score of 84%.
After successfully completing the HeartCode PALS Course, including the online portion, followed by the hands-on skills session, students should be able to understand the following:
Key changes in Pediatric Advanced life support, reflecting the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
12 pediatric, hospital-based, patient cases with up to four healthcare providers, presented though eSimulation technology.
Define systems of care
Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes
Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of pediatric patients
Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early AED use
Recognition and management of respiratory emergencies
Recognize and perform early management of respiratory arrest, failure, and cardiac arrest
Basic and advanced airway management
Recognition and management of shock emergencies
Recognize and perform early management of different types of shock cases in Hypovolemic, septic, anaphylactic, cardiogenic, obstructive, and neurogenic states
Recognize and perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
Recognition and early management of periarrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia and tachycardia
Related pharmacology
Recognize and perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team

Course Format/Time:
Blended Learning (online portion, followed by hands-on session)
This blended learning course includes an online portion and a hands-on session. The online portion must be successfully completed to gain entry to a hands-on session.
The online portion can be completed in 6 to 9 hours, depending on the student’s level of experience. The hands-on session for HeartCode PALS will take approximately 3-4 hours without breaks.
Course time may vary for online and hands-on sessions initial provider or renewal course and based on 1 instructor: 6 students: 2 manikins.
Course Prerequisites:
HeartCode PALS Part 1requires prior knowledge that will be applied in using the PALS treatment algorithms. Unprepared or inexperienced students may require additional time to complete HeartCode PALS Part 1. To be successful in any PALS course, students should be able to identify ECG rhythms and should know pharmacology specific to cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies before beginning the course. It is strongly recommended that students review the PALS course materials contained within the program and complete the Precourse Self-Assessment prior to attempting the patient cases.
