HeartCode® Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (Online Part 1) is a Web-based, self-paced instructional program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. In this environment, students apply their knowledge to real-time decision-making and skills development. Debriefings and coaching are provided immediately after each simulation to facilitate learning.

This program presents 10 interactive hospital-based cases to teach ACLS knowledge, building on the foundation of lifesaving BLS for Healthcare Providers skills and the importance of continuous, high-quality CPR.

Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the written exam with a score of 84%. Students then are able to attend the hands-on session required for full course completion.

After completing the cognitive portion of the course, students practice and test their skills with an AHA Instructor or on a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) system. Upon successful completion of the cognitive and skills tests, students receive a course completion card.

Skills sessions can be sold separately or, more commonly, with a bundle package.

Audience:

HeartCode ACLS Part 1 is for healthcare professionals who either direct or participate in the management of cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiovascular emergencies, specifically those seeking an alternative (nonclassroom) method for completing an initial or update ACLS Course. This includes personnel in emergency response, emergency medicine, intensive care and critical care units such as physicians, nurses, and paramedics, as well as others who need an ACLS course completion card for job or other requirements.

HeartCode ACLS is the AHA’s ACLS blended learning delivery method. Blended learning is a combination of eLearning, in which a student completes part of the course in a self-directed manner, followed by a hands-on session.

The online portion of this comprehensive eLearning program uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings.

Course Content and Description:

HeartCode® ACLS is a self-directed, comprehensive eLearning program that uses eSimulation technology to allow students to assess and treat patients in virtual healthcare settings. To enter the course, students must complete a precourse self-assessment. Students will then be presented with a team dynamics lesson and 10 In-hospital patient cases, including a BLS case and 2 Megacode cases.

Upon successful completion of all the patient cases, students must pass the written exam with a score of 84%. Students then are able to attend the hands-on session required for full course completion.

After successfully completing the HeartCode ACLS Course, including the online portion, followed by the hands-on skills session, students should be able to understand the following:

  • Key changes in advanced cardiovascular life support, reflecting the American Heart Association Guidelines for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care
  • Ten adult patient cases with up to four healthcare providers, presented through eSimulation technology:
    • One BLS case
    • Seven cases representing cardiovascular, respiratory and stroke emergencies
    • Two Megacodes
  • Define systems of care
  • Discuss how the use of a rapid response team or medical emergency team may improve patient outcomes
  • Discuss early recognition and management of ACS and stroke, including appropriate disposition
    • Management of acute coronary syndromes (ACS) and stroke
  • Apply the BLS, Primary, and Secondary Assessments sequence for a systematic evaluation of adult patients
    • Perform prompt, high-quality BLS, including prioritizing early chest compressions and integrating early AED use
  • Recognize and perform early management of respiratory arrest
    • Basic and advanced airway management
  • Recognize and perform early management of bradyarrhythmias and tachyarrhythmias that may result in cardiac arrest or complicate resuscitation outcome
    • Recognition and early management of periarrest conditions such as symptomatic bradycardia and tachycardia
    • Related pharmacology
  • Recognize and perform early management of cardiac arrest until termination of resuscitation or transfer of care, including immediate post–cardiac arrest care
  • Effective communication as a member and leader of a resuscitation team
    • Model effective communication as a member or leader of a high-performance team
    • Evaluate resuscitative efforts during a cardiac arrest through continuous assessment of CPR quality, monitoring the patient’s physiologic response, and delivering real-time feedback to the team

Course Format/Time:

  • Blended Learning (online portion, followed by hands-on session)
    • This blended learning course includes an online portion and a hands-on session. The online portion must be successfully completed to gain entry to a hands-on session.
  • The online portion can be completed in 6 ½ to 7 hours, depending on the student’s level of experience. The hands-on session for HeartCode ACLS will take approximately 5 hours without breaks.
  • Course time may vary for online and hands-on sessions initial provider or renewal course and based on 1 instructor: 6 students: 2 manikins.

Course Prerequisites:

HeartCode ACLS Part 1 requires prior knowledge that will be applied in using the ACLS treatment algorithms. Unprepared or inexperienced students may require additional time to complete HeartCode ACLS Part 1. To be successful in any ACLS course, students should be able to identify ECG rhythms and should know pharmacology specific to cardiopulmonary arrest and other cardiopulmonary emergencies before beginning the course.

  • Present your unexpired American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS) Provider and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) Card to be considered a renewing provider and pay a reduced price for the course
    • We do not accept non-AHA provider cards
    • Please sign up for PDRE’s accredited BLS and ACLS for Healthcare Providers course and receive the most globally recognized AHA provider card
  • Knowledge and recognition of basic ECG heart rhythms and Pharmacology
  • ACLS Provider Manual or Handbook for ECC

Certification:

To receive an ACLS course completion card using this program, students must complete three parts:

  • HeartCode ACLS Part 1
    • Upon successful completion of the online portion, including the written exam, students receive a Part 1 certificate of completion, which must be presented for parts 2 and 3.
  • HeartCode ACLS Part 2*
    • A hands-on skills practice session with an AHA ACLS Instructor or using a voice-assisted manikin (VAM) system
  • HeartCode ACLS Part 3*
    • A skills test with an AHA ACLS Instructor or using a VAM system
  • HeartCode ACLS Parts 2 and 3* should be completed in one “skills practice and testing” session.
  • Upon successful course completion, including demonstration of psychomotor skills competency in all learning stations by passing the CPR and AED skills test, bag-mask ventilation skills test, and a Megacode test in addition to a written test, students receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) course completion card, valid for two years.
    • A certificate of completion is available to print when the online portion has been completed successfully
    • For greater success, it is recommended that the hands-on skills session be conducted shortly after completing the online portion
    • Upon successful completion of both the online and hands-on portions of the course, students will receive an AHA ACLS Provider course completion card (print or eCard), valid for 2 years

    • The American Heart Association is accredited by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC), the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE), and the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME), to provide continuing education for the healthcare team.
  • AMA Credit Designation Statement - Physicians 
    • The American Heart Association designates this enduring material for a maximum of 4.50 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™. Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.  **AMA Credit must be claimed within 6 months of attendance. CME/CE will no longer be available to claim for this activity after six months of attending.
  • AAPA Credit Acceptance Statement – Physician Assistants
    • AAPA accepts certificates of participation for educational activities certified for AMA PRA Category 1 Credit™ from organizations accredited by ACCME or a recognized state medical society. Physician assistants may receive a maximum of 4.50 hour of Category I credit for completing this program.
  • AANP Credit Acceptance Statement – Nurse Practitioners

  • ANCC Credit Designation Statement - Nurses

Scheduling & Discounts:

  • Once the course fee has been received, our staff will give the student a HeartCode ACLS Part 1 Key Code through email, phone, or at the facility to be used for online access to activate the course.
  • Codes will be emailed as soon as possible or within 48 hours of orders placed between 7:30am to 5:30pm PST Monday through Friday. If order is placed on Friday after 5:00 pm PST, then the key code may be emailed Monday morning.
  • Upon receipt of your access key code, activate and complete the ACLS course online at www.onlineaha.org, print out your online course completion certificate, and call our PDRE office to schedule your skills tests.
  • Please bring a copy of your course completion certificate to our PDRE facility.
  • Once you have successfully completed your skills testing, you will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Provider Card that same day or it will be emailed to you as soon as possible.

Scheduling & Discounts:

  • Once the course fee has been received, our staff will give the student a HeartCode ACLS Part 1 Key Code through email, phone, or at the facility to be used for online access to activate the course.
  • Codes will be emailed as soon as possible or within 48 hours of orders placed between 7:30am to 5:30pm PST Monday through Friday. If order is placed on Friday after 5:00 pm PST, then the key code may be emailed Monday morning.
  • Upon receipt of your access key code, activate and complete the ACLS course online at www.onlineaha.org, print out your online course completion certificate, and call our PDRE office to schedule your skills tests.
  • Please bring a copy of your course completion certificate to our PDRE facility.
  • Once you have successfully completed your skills testing, you will receive an American Heart Association (AHA) Provider Card that same day or it will be emailed to you as soon as possible.
  • PDRE offers some desktop and laptop computer access for the course. Limited seating(s) apply.
