 Airway Management 

Airway Management is a unique program designed to give students the chance to learn, practice and demonstrate their ability in applying many airway skills used in resuscitation. Students increase their awareness of various airway products and skills required. The course is designed into units, and some are optional, so facilitators can present the units that meet the students’ needs.

In this classroom-based, Instructor-led course, students participate in simulated clinical scenarios and learning stations. Students work with an AHA Airway Management Instructor to complete Airway Management skills practice and skills testing. Students may also complete a written exam.

Audience:

The course provides training for healthcare providers whose occupation or volunteer activities require airway management skills as well as professionals in the field of resuscitation and airway management who might encounter emergency situations needing airway management during their work. These include:

  • Physicians and nurses not specializing in pediatrics
  • Nurse practitioners
  • Physician assistants
  • EMTs
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Prehospital and in-facility healthcare providers (outside of critical-care areas)

  • Laryngeal mask airway (optional)
  • Esophageal-tracheal combitube (optional)
  • Endotracheal tube (optional)
  • Impedance threshold devise (optional)

  • Airway Management Facilitator Manual (PDRE Instructor Materials)
  • Airway Management DVD (PDRE Instructor Materials)

Course Format/Time:

  • Classroom-based
  • Initial Provider Course:
    • Requires approximately 5 hours to complete, including skills practice and skills testing; with additional time for breaks and lunch
  • Renewal Course:
    • Requires approximately 3 hours, including skills practice and skills testing; with additional time for breaks and lunch
  • Course time based on 1 instructor: 6 student
  • Course length can vary depending on needs and the units taught

Course Prerequisites:

  • Present your expired American Heart Association (AHA) Airway Management Certificate of Completion to be considered a renewing provider and pay a reduced price for the course
    • We do not accept non-AHA provider cards
    • Please sign up for PDRE’s accredited Airway Management for Healthcare Providers course and receive the most globally recognized AHA provider card
  • Airway Management Student Guide (PDRE Student Materials)
  • A current 2015 Airway Management Student Guide is required to attend the course
  • Purchase the 2015 book from PDRE for $25 during online class enrollment or before the start of the course at our facility
  • Please bring your book if you own the most up-to-date version
  • Airway Management Facilitator Manual (PDRE Instructor Materials)
  • A current 2015 Airway Management Facilitator Manual is required to instruct the AHA course

Certification:

Students who successfully complete the Airway Management Course, including the following components, will receive an Airway Management Certificate of Completion, valid for two years:

  • In the classroom, an Airway Management Facilitator conducts video-guided instruction and skill demonstrations, and works with students to complete hands-on skills practice and skills testing.
